Spitalfields City Farm
Spitalfields Farm currently manages part of Allen Gardens in collaboration with Tower Hamlets Council and the Friends of Allen Gardens. The farm is committed to making the Gardens a relaxing and inspiring green space for both people and wildlife alike, so in the past year they have planted thousands of wildflower plants and spring-flowering bulbs and great swathes of wildflower meadows.
In early summer, the park comes alive with drifts of cornfield annuals bordering areas of perennial meadow, planted with a mixture of wildflower species and meadow grasses. A native hedge border surrounds an inner football area and gaps in the hedgerow are planted with scabious, knapweeds and non-native but wildlife-friendly annuals, planted by local residents. Future plans for the area are currently being developed by the Council but expect volunteers and local residents to keep adding more wildflowers well into the future.
The next step is to install benches with flower beds underneath for relaxing on a sunny day. The farm and the Friends of Allen Gardens are developing a long term management plan for the space and they need your help to make it the best park in East London.
Practical gardening sessions
On the afternoon of the First Sunday of every month, come and help Spitalfields City Farm to make Allen Gardens bloom. This is your opportunity to learn more about our native wildflowers, brush up on your gardening skills, or just get some exercise and help make your local park look great.
Meet at the Allen Gardens entrance to Spitalfields City Farm at 2pm and we will be there come rain or shine. Tools will be provided but please wear stout footwear. Tea/coffee and biscuits will be provided at the end of the session which will be around 3.30pm in the Winter and 4.30pm in Summer For more information please contact the farm's horticulture Project Coordinator: http://www.spitalfieldscityfarm.org/sustainable-living/allen-gardens.html
