Stag beetle

Stag beetle spectacular and community picnic
Tower Habitats, working with Trees for Cities and the Council's Parks section, is running a community picnic at King Edward Memorial Park, Shadwell on Tuesday 22nd February from 11am to 2pm. The event will be centred around our action to create new habitat for Britain's largest beetle, the spectacular stag beetle (see photo above). This threatened species has a stronghold in east London. We'll be putting the finishing touches to a new loggery in the park, which will provide food for stag beetle larvae. The larvae spend several years underground, feeding on rotting wood, before emerging as adult beetles during the summer. Visitors will be able to take home a beetle bucket to bury in their own garden, and experts from the People's Trust for Endangered Species will be on hand to provide advice and information.

We'll also be planting bulbs to brighten up the park, and there'll be arts and crafts, a treasure trail and face painting for the kids, and hot refreshements. For more information, see our flyer.

Why not come along!
